It depends on the fault — here is the honest breakdown:

• Battery or audio jack repair — your music is completely safe. Music lives on the hard drive, not the battery.
• Hard drive failure — music on the old drive will be lost. We replace with a new drive or SSD and restore your iPod. iTunes/Apple Music purchases can be re-downloaded via your Apple ID. MP3s and ripped music cannot be recovered.
• Motherboard failure (full refurbishment) — music cannot be recovered from a dead logic board. iTunes purchases recoverable, MP3s are not.

We always diagnose first and send you a quote before doing anything that risks your data. We never proceed without your approval.

When the logic board (motherboard) has failed, we carry out a complete rebuild: new logic board + new SSD storage + new battery. Your iPod comes back running like new.

We have tested this in our workshop across multiple units. Here is what we found:

• Apple 5W wall charger (5V 1A or 5V 2A) — charges normally at around 3W. This is the safe and recommended charger.
• GAN multi-port chargers — only delivers around 1W on 4th and 6th gen iPods. The iPod partially accepts the connection but cannot negotiate a stable current.
• DC bench supply at 5V 1A (e.g. Sugon 3005D) — zero output. The iPod draws nothing at all because there is no Apple data pin signal present on a bench supply.

This is not a fault with your iPod. It is deliberate behaviour — Apple built an authentication check into the charging circuit to protect the device from unstable power sources.

The same cable was used across all three tests. The difference was entirely the charger.
